Off Topic: This video on planned obsolescence by industries is indirectly relevant to development of drugs (develop not the best, but the most profitable) - exacerbated when generic drugs lack sponsors and governmental organizations assume only big companies can develop new uses

This video is about stuff: light bulbs, printers, phones and why they aren't better.

Video examines the roles cartels have played in limiting functionality of products - to create planned obsolescence and keep demand alive.

Where companies collude to ensure certain outcomes.

It is not exactly but somewhat reminiscent of the goings on these days - where generic drugs are ignored on profitability grounds - not just by companies (quite legitimate for them to do so) - but by governmental agencies who act like they are enablers only for company activities, and forget their direct obligation to the public.

The end result is a system where the governmental agency (because of the influence and revolving door with companies) winds up behaving like the type of common meeting ground or cartel mentioned in the above video. A place where standards are created - ostensibly to regulate, but which wind up creating a tilted playing field where there is little space for cheap generic alternatives to flourish.
