Whiteboard Doctor
Ivermectin has compassionate use in the Dominican Republic and has been used in thousands of patients. The Dominican Republic studied the outcomes out of two large hospitals in those that had received Ivermectin compared to the general population. They found an overall mortality rate of 1.2%, which the authors note is much lower than an often cited mortality rate of 2.5-3.0%. Interestingly, there was no difference in mortality in those that required admission to the ICU compared to the general population-based mortality rate. We discuss this study and illustrate the Ivermectin dosing used, time from symptom onset, additional medications, and several additional secondary endpoints. In 99.3% of the outpatients who were treated with Ivermectin, the establishment of early treatment (on average 3.6 days from the onset of symptoms), was effective since the infection did not progress, they did not merit subsequent hospitalization and had no deaths.
The mortality of the severe to critical patients hospitalized in the ICU was similar to that reported in the international literature of 30.9% versus 30.6% in the patients of the present study. Total mortality adding up outpatients and hospitalized patients treated with Ivermectin was 1.2%, well below the average 3% reported in most series and overall mortality worldwide, by the time of completion of this study.
