Another ivermectin success story that won't convince those who only pay attention to RCTs.
Hmm: Looking at the numbers, I already posted the content of this article. Oh well.
For Héctor Carvallo, medical coordinator of the Doctor A. Eurnekian Hospital in Ezeiza, the use of Ivermectin as preventive treatment in health personnel, and as therapy to treat those diagnosed, produced favorable results
From the appearance of the first cases of coronavirus in December 2019, through the declaration of a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) to widely exceed the barrier of one million infected, the new SARS-CoV-2 put in check to the global healthcare system and it has researchers from the main pharmaceutical companies running a race against time in search of an effective treatment against this new disease.
In this sense, more and more test protocols are being applied in real time to combat the disease, one of them : the use of Ivermectin. Although it is usually used in veterinary activity, generally by injection and, to a lesser extent, orally, to combat ticks, scabies and nematodes, in equines, cattle, goats, sheep, swine, canines and felines it is also used in human medicine, in the form of tablets for the treatment of some processes caused by parasites and in the form of a cream for the treatment of rosacea, among others.
And one of the institutions that is currently applying a protocol with this drug is the Doctor A. Eurnekian Hospital in Ezeiza. “In Argentina this medicine has been authorized since 1995, therefore it is not an experimental drug. Of course, here he is authorized to administer it orally in humans and not in injectable form, ” Dr. Héctor Carvallo, academic coordinator of the Eurnekian Hospital, a former professor of medicine at the UBA and current professor of medicine at the UAI , explained to Infobae. of the UM.
#The protocol
On May 27, the institution started using Ivermectin for two different protocols : one for prevention and the other for treatment. "In the case of prevention, it is intended only for medical personnel, who are those who are in the front line fighting the virus, and we cannot afford to have the entire guard spread, since its function is very important. In the case of treatment, it is intended for patients whose swab tested positive for COVID-19, "emphasized Carvallo.
Ivermectin for prophylaxis among medical personnel!
Thus, a group of 110 health professionals is participating in the prevention protocol, which combines Ivermectin in very low doses with carrageenan, a natural product derived from red algae that acts as an emulsifier and which is approved by ANMAT . ” The research that we are carrying out in the hospital is very interesting, since fifteen days have passed and no one has yet infected. On the other hand, in the group of those who chose not to follow the protocol, for the moment, we have two people who tested positive, "explained the medical coordinator.
15/15 ivermectin-treated are uninfected after two weeks; 2 of those not dosed with IVM caught the virus.
Two weeks isn't much of a test.
Regarding the method for those diagnosed with COVID-19, the specialist explained that the protocol is called IDEA and corresponds to the name of the combined drugs that are provided to the patient according to the severity of the case: Ivermectin, Dexamethasone, enozaparin, and aspirin. "The use of drugs is combined according to the severity of each case. At the moment, there are 123 patients to whom we apply this protocol. Of these, 100 were ambulatory and 23 required hospitalization. Of the smallest group, they were patients with comorbidities, and an average age range of 65 years ”, described Carvallo.
Regarding the outcomes after the application of the protocol , the professional assured that most of the 23 hospitalized patients were discharged and there was only one deceased : “These protocols, which are already registered in the National library of Medicine, are very important Since all medications have been approved for many years. The application is not infallible but it is effective ”.
Regarding the duration of the treatment, Carvallo said that they calculate that it will last 30 days on average. Regarding the cost of this treatment, it is estimated that it is $ 15 per day: “We are clear that a human life cannot be priced, but it is true that it is accessible and that it allows any hospital or clinic to apply it. At the moment, we are very hopeful with the results obtained ”.
#Ivermectin is in fact one of the six most promising drugs to combat the coronavirus COVID-19
A study led by Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, together with the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity , showed in cell cultures that an antiparasitic medicine, called Ivermectin, available worldwide, is capable of killing the coronavirus in 48 hours. .
"We have found that even a single dose could kill the entire virus within 48 hours, and that a truly significant reduction occurs within 24 hours," revealed the researchers, whose work was published in the journal Antiviral Research.
“The world is waiting for a miracle drug to arrive and save everything. Betting on a miracle treatment is relying on miracles and we are not in a position to expect one. What needs to be done is clear: we must study the pathophysiology of the virus, that is, investigate how it enters, attacks, damages and kills, and then block those four important points, "concluded Carvallo.
23 hospitalized and 1 dead out of 123 is entirely consistent with how people do normally, depending on how broad their testing is, ages, etc. This is why we need RCTs. I would like as much as anyone for this to turn out to be be an effective treatment but these anecdotes where some doctor treats some patients and they get better doesn't tell us much.
"Of these, 100 were ambulatory and 23 required hospitalization. Of the smallest group, they were patients with comorbidities, and an average age range of 65 years ”, described Carvallo.
So 1 death is 4.3% of a group with at least 2 strikes against them (60+ years and at least one comorbidity, possibly more). Seems quite low for those conditions. It would be interesting to know how long the ones that were discharged were hospitalized.
We don't know if they're including age as a comorobidity. We don't know enough about the sample. Absent any kind of real data, these physician reports where they say "I treated some patients and they got better" don't tell us anything. I'm not trying to be a downer-I hope this works, but the vast majority of Covid patients get better and these reports don't give us any information.
