From a quick skim, nothing new here, more or less: Ivermectin has potential use against COVID-19. Duh! And need clinical trials to test that. No shit! There are about 32 trials underway.

Posting nonetheless as a riposte against the ivermectin-neophytes who say "Ivermectin is a de-wormer, not an anti-viral!"

I live in Arizona, in a border town with Mexico. I know personally, 4 people (age range 58 to 75) obese, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. the 4 people have taken ivermectin and all are well. All bought ivermectin in Mexico. 2 fully recovered. The government should rush ivermectin testing. Both governments, Mexican and US. Many doctors in Mexico are already using it without Mexican government authorization yet.

This is very good news, because I'm in that age range and have all those comorbidities. I'm doing the usual things that the public health experts recommend, esp. I am isolating super-hard. I'm also taking ivermectin, hoping that it will prevent my catching the disease.

The two who are not fully recovered: what's their status? Have they redosed?

The government should rush ivermectin testing.

It's shocking how little ivermectin coverage there is in US media. I don't think the authorities know about it. How did your friends learn about ivermectin?

Yes, it is good news. One is my wife, she had symptoms Thursday, tested Friday, and started taking ivermectin Friday, two tabs daily since Friday. She had very mild symptoms. A little cough and never fever. Today she feel very well. I have been taken ivermectin also even that I tested negative. The other lady not fully recovered about the same timeline as my wife. The fully recovered (75 years and 65 years) tested positive about 20 days ago. 2/3 days very mild symptoms and then symptoms free for about 10 days

Sounds like your wife and her friend are on their way! Great story, thank-you. I wish you continued good luck!

I found about ivermectin thanks to you here in reddit. The 75 years old ivermectin was prescribed by a Mexican doctor friend of her. So, maybe you saved our life. Thanks again

What a nice thing to say! :)

I'm sitting by myself at home, affixed to my computer. I'm high risk about 6 ways, so I only venture out to buy food or pick up prescriptions or (seldom) see my teenage son, which hurts. I'd be pretty lonely without my ivermectin fixation, which has brought a sense of community.

Yesterday I visited a MD's-only Facebook group, that has grown to about 500 MDs in the last few weeks -- and found about five links to my posts on this sub. Made me feel useful.

Thanks again for your kind sentiment! I'm smiling.

I'm following all your posts (and I'm a Professor (not-medical)), if your ego needs more stroking :)
Seriously, though, one person can make a difference in collating and curating sources of information. It is very valuable for a great many more people than you realise, particularly in the anglo-saxon community.

Did you run across the post about someone that had covid-19 (and seemed like he was having a hard time recovering) and decided to try self-medicating with ivermectin? He said he was going to post updates

There was a post about a guy who had been suffering from a dozen nasty symptoms for a couple months, who self-dosed with the horse paste version of ivermectin, and his symptoms cleared up except his shortness of breath, which was better but still a problem. He could finally sleep well.

Is that the guy you're thinking of?

He stopped updating soon after taking a second dose. I PMed him a couple times, no response. Finally he deleted his account. I hope he's OK.

yeah that was the one. Hope he's ok too. I've been tempted to buy a tube or two from amazon 'just in case', but the whole HCQ thing has made me a little nervous about that. those RCT results can't come soon enough.

Are you concerned about safety? If so, read some/all of these:

A couple really solid formal studies of ivermectin safety (ignore the guy making the "concentration too high" argument, it's nonsense).

This is a guy who self-doses the horse paste to treat his scabies. There's a link to his video about how to measure out the horse paste.

Here are 18 reviews on Amazon by people who ate the horse paste safely and effectively.

It is not a scientifically valid idea, or perhaps my google fu falls short and I just can't find the articles -- but arguably ivermection is the safest drug known. Literally billions of doses have been taken by billions of people (I've read as high as 3.7 billion, no source for that though) over decades. It's safe.

Are you concerned about safety?

No, I'm pretty convinced of Ivermectin's safety profile, at least outside of the realm of covid. Even the horse paste seems completely safe for humans based off a lot of the people doing DIY scabies treatments (not that I would expect it being different, considering it's the exact same active ingredient.

My main concern is just that it doesn't potentially make covid *worse*. I know it's really speculative, but by my crude reasoning it seems that it interacts with the virus somehow, and in vitro it greatly impedes reproduction of it- I just don't know if I'm ready to assume that it can only have a net positive (or at worse no) effect, and not enhance it in individuals by some still-unknown interaction. Really, a simple moderately powered RCT showing no major downsides would be enough for me at this point. If I had any of the known risk factors for serious complications, or if there were more cases where I live (we've been seeing maybe 10-15 cases a day in the county I live in for a while now) that would definitely change my calculus for sure.

OK, good luck!

So I was at my local farm store today (there's a ton of them here in WI) and I happened to see that the horse paste was on sale - $2.50 a tube. I finally caved and bought two, it seems like such a high potential risk / reward ratio that I'd be crazy not to at least have some of the stuff on hand. Really hoping we get some solid data on this stuff soon

I posted this article twice. This is the abstract copied from the now-deleted duplicate post:

#Abstract

Ivermectin proposes many potentials effects to treat a range of diseases, with its antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-cancer properties as a wonder drug. It is highly effective against many microorganisms including some viruses. In this comprehensive systematic review, antiviral effects of ivermectin are summarized including in vitro and in vivo studies over the past 50 years. Several studies reported antiviral effects of ivermectin on RNA viruses such as Zika, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile, Hendra, Newcastle, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, chikungunya, Semliki Forest, Sindbis, Avian influenza A, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, Human immunodeficiency virus type 1, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Furthermore, there are some studies showing antiviral effects of ivermectin against DNA viruses such as Equine herpes type 1, BK polyomavirus, pseudorabies, porcine circovirus 2, and bovine herpesvirus 1. Ivermectin plays a role in several biological mechanisms, therefore it could serve as a potential candidate in the treatment of a wide range of viruses including COVID-19 as well as other types of positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. In vivo studies of animal models revealed a broad range of antiviral effects of ivermectin, however, clinical trials are necessary to appraise the potential efficacy of ivermectin in clinical setting.

This is such a good review. I accidentally reposted it until I noticed this was already posted here.

Besides, in vitro evaluations showed that the drug did not cross the placental barrier and had temperature-dependent stability.

The placenta forms by the 2nd trimester. This means that ivermectin is likely safe during the majority of pregnancy (placenta is functioning by week 12). Usually drugs given early in pregnancy do not cause birth defects (If they do affect the fetus, it is usually abortive). So ivermectin is likely safe in pregnancy as long as you are willing to deal with an unknown risk of an abortion.

Ivermectin is excreted in breastmilk, so it may cause problems in a newborn (or may provide protection depending on how you want to take it).
